More Canadians than ever are feeling the sting of the housing crisis, but luckily there are plenty of ways to support fellow citizens in this time of need. Charitable organizations meet with those affected by our current day crisis to understand the issues and get people back on their feet. Non-profit organizations have diverse sets of goals and programs that are greatly effective in their own ways. Here is how Habitat fits in perspective with other charitable organizations in the region.
Raising The Roof
A youth-focused charity that prevents homelessness in Canada, launched in 1996 and still finding long-term solutions to homelessness. Raising the Roof has a clever new campaign called the Upstream Project that is based on a tried and true campaign that was used to help Australian youth. In the Upstream Project, homelessness is prevented before it happens. This three-step program finds at-risk youth in their schools, connects them with services, and then evaluates the work done based on evidence gathered in the process.
Good Shepherd Centre
A combination shelter and food and clothing bank with a program to benefit every age, gender and family. The Good Shepherd has been in service from its multiple Hamilton locations for over 50 years. For those who are struggling there is no need to sacrifice one necessity for another since The Good Shepherd Centre offers food, clothing, shelter, and health services on a regular basis. Besides crisis support, Good Shepherd also provides financial assistance to trustees like budgeting and payment of rents.
Covenant House
This organization with shelters in 28 different Canadian cities serves the important need of crisis assistance for youth. Covenant House is conscious of the vulnerabilities and needs of youth who are living on the street, surveying youth for mental health concerns, LGBTQ+ identities, involvement in child welfare, and trafficking victimization. Donating to Covenant House is sure to be a direct help to vulnerable or at-risk people. With decades of experience in housing, organization, and intervention, Covenant House protects those with no place to call home.
Eva’s Initiatives
Focused on homeless youth and long-term solutions, Eva’s Initiatives acknowledges the potential of impoverished youth. The staff at Eva’s gives those in need of the resources and education to start new lives off the streets. Eva’s Initiatives takes care of and houses youth while the tenants recover from harsh conditions such as cold winters, abusive households or street violence. Those who rely on Eva’s Initiatives learn to protect themselves from exploitation and build themselves into independence. There is an average of 2,000 youths that could use help any given night in Toronto and Eva’s turns your donations into high impact assistance.
