The ultimate guide to DIY for every room

Do you have a ton of unused furniture lying around? Rooms that are closed off to guests and should not be seen by anyone? Want to transform your home in a unique and personalized way?

Sounds like you need DIY in your life and in your home! With these DIY tips and tricks, you will learn how to organize and decorate your home in no time.

Garage

Let’s start off with the area in your home where you keep all your tools and outdoor equipment.

If they happen to be a bit disorganized, no problem! A storage shelf should do the trick and it can be constructed using wooden boards from an old piece of furniture, such as a table. Click here to learn more and remember to measure the area for the shelves first!

If you have tools that need to be readily available, consider putting up a pegboard. They are fairly inexpensive and you just need to add a few hooks to hang your tools. This will help with freeing up floor space and making more room in your garage overall.

Last but not least, you can create a coat rack that can hang both your screwdrivers and clothing articles. Simply drill a few holes (up to you on how many you want) into an oak table leg and use 2 L-brackets to for mounting it. You can then recoat your screwdrivers with a variety of colours to make it an eye-catching ensemble.

Now you will have an organized DIY workshop that you can proudly show off to others.

Living Room

Is your living room a bit drab? Try livening it up by adding small plants, such as succulents, in glass jars and placing them on your bookshelves, desk and more. This will not only brighten your living room but also, according to Our House Plants, indoor house plants are great for your mental health as well. You can also paint the glass jars any colour you want!

Stencil wall art is another fun DIY project that you can hang up in your living room. You can stencil your favourite artwork or lyrics onto a flat surface using spray paint and then frame it.

If you have any old coffee tables, sofas or armchairs lying around, you can upholster it with a fabric of your choice. Upholstering is when you provide furniture with soft padding. Click here to watch a tutorial on how to upholster a chair.

Need some ideas on how to energize the dining room so that you can show off it to guests? Try decorating your walls with personalized plates! You can buy them at thrift stores, paint them in a bright colour and then hang them on hooks onto your wall. You can also glue one plate onto another to give a contrasting effect.

Another DIY idea for your dining room is to decorate it with wallpaper and you can do this in other rooms also. Wallpaper adds boldness to a room and can be used in various ways. It can be hung on your walls, in a frame, behind a door, it’s all up to you. This site offers more advice on how to decorate with wallpaper and you can purchase wallpaper here too.

You can try upholstering any used dining room furniture that you might have lying around, as mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Kitchen

It’s important to keep your kitchen neat and tidy at all times and you can do this with a few simple tricks.

One thing you can do is install stackable wire racks to maximize cabinet space and for accessibility. They can come in different sizes and they allow all kinds of housewares to be stored neatly in them. Similar to wire racks, pull-out cabinets do not take up as much room and can fit nicely in small areas, such as that tiny space near the fridge (you know which one I’m talking about).

Hang up a chalkboard in your kitchen to have a fun way of creating your grocery list for the week, along with other reminders and recipes. They are cheap, can come in many sizes and are usually found in dollar stores.

Having a hard time finding certain items in your kitchen? Use labels! You can design them however you want and all you need is some markers and paper.

Bathroom

Here are a few ways to turn your bathroom from dull and old to stylish and new again.

Make your own shower curtain using fabric of your choice (choose something that can stand up to moisture). Click this link to learn the basics of creating a shower curtain. You can retile your shower as well, it will not cost that much if you mix-and-match materials. You can find bargains for shower tiles at closeouts and salvage yards.

If you happen to have an old wooden ladder, refresh it with chalk paint and use it as a towel rack. Or stop by your local flea market to pick one up. A different idea can be to pick up a wooden animal that is big enough to drill a few holes for toothbrushes and then spray paint it with a glossy white.

Adding potted plants can create a natural vibe in your bathroom and it’s a good addition to have overall.

Bedroom

The bedroom is the place where you usually spend most of your time after a long day at work so it is important that it represents who it belongs to.

Transform your light switch covers into eye-catching works of art. Choose a print that you like, cut out openings for the switches, and glue them onto the covers. Easy-peasy.

Design your own pillows for your bed that you can mix-and-match anytime. Click here to choose what kind of pillow you want to design and create for your bedroom.

Mini lanterns for bedside tables are a warm addition to your bedroom that is simple to make. Grab a few mason jars, add paint or other decorations, and then place a candle inside of each one.
