Many people use the new year as a time to set goals for themselves, this is no different at Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga. This year will see Habitat HM build more homes for families in the community than ever before. We have been hard at work preparing for the next 365 days, and our affiliate has committed to making 2018 our most industrious year yet. Plans are in the works for us to help more people, in more ways than ever before.
Here are just some of the ways we plan on making an impact in our community in 2018.
Brush With Kindness
The Brush with Kindness Campaign is something that has been done in other affiliates quite successfully, and we hope to replicate this success in our community of Halton-Mississauga. The program brings volunteers in to clean up an established community in order to reinforce pride in one’s home. It’s a wonder what some care and a fresh coat of paint can do to an exterior of a building, and it’s even more extraordinary what it can do to someone’s pride in their home.
This community revitalization program is set to roll out in 2018.
Home Pickups
Habitat HM’s ReStore introduced home pickups in 2017 and hopes to build on the program this year. Instead of asking donors to drop off donations at one of our three ReStores, for a small fee we can send a pickup crew to bring the donations in ourselves.
Our new expanded fleet of trucks will ensure that in 2018 the breadth of selection and quality of our ReStore’s inventory will be better than it has ever been.
Habitat Handyman
Habitat Handyman is a program that uses our experienced staff and volunteers to do low-cost home improvement services.
This program was developed with low-income households in mind but has now expanded to also help Halton’s growing seniors population. These home improvement services can increase quality of life, and extending the time they are able to stay in their home before moving to (often quite expensive) seniors housing.
We leverage our professional tradespeople and most experienced volunteers in order to make the program affordable. The cost of Habitat Handyman is essentially service with a small mark up. All funds through Habitat Handyman goes towards local build projects.
ReVive DIY Centre
The ReVive centre is the extension of our ReStore. It takes previously unsellable items from the ReStore and gives them new life by refurbishing, repairing and renewing the item. These are then sold as pieces in our ReStores.
The ReVive Centre has built upon the ReStores incredible impact on the environment. Our ReStores have diverted millions of pounds of waste from landfills in the form of used home furnishings. The ReVive Centre takes this a step further by allowing us to accept items that would have previously been seen as unsellable by our ReStore and recycling them to a better-than-new condition.
