When you volunteer your time and effort with a charity you believe in, you gain meaningful skills and make connections with people in your community. Our goal at Habitat for Humanity is to ensure everyone has a safe place to call home. We strive to achieve this goal in many different ways, all with the help of our incredible volunteers! When we can rely on individuals, teams and youth (16+) to help us, we can provide unique opportunities for those who want to make a change in their community!
Why should someone in Mississauga or Halton volunteer? The act of volunteering can bring a positive impact on your life and others, as well as create great benefits for your physical and mental health. Being connected in a group and helping others in need can help fill a sense of confidence in oneself and bring positivity to your life and others. But what if you don’t want to get dirty on a build site, but still want to help in your community?
Our ReStore and ReVive Centre
Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga has several different environments where you can help out. From the build sites, our office or even a house in your neighbourhood, we try and help those in our communities anywhere, and anyway we can. Our ReStore is a retail outlet where we sell new and used building/household items, with every purchase helping support our build projects in our community. Our ReStore provides many opportunities for a Halton volunteer, from being warehouse and cashier personnel to being a tester, and making sure our donations are in great condition ready for sale.
Our ReVive Centre located in Mississauga offers a very unique opportunity for our volunteers. The goal of our ReVive program is to take our salvaged and donated materials and up-cycle them into products that would be useful. We encourage our volunteers to get creative and help keep acceptable materials out of landfills. This helps us create household items and one-of-a-kind pieces from existing material, all while continuing to raise money to put towards our home building projects. You can help us reduce our carbon footprint and provide homes to those in need, all through our ReVive Centre!
Office Opportunities
If you’re looking to volunteer to gain experience in promoting our message and build up practical skills in an office environment, look no further than our Burlington office! We have several departments with different opportunities to ensure there’s something for everyone. From Communications and Office Administration departments to setting up our builds with the Resource Development and Construction departments, there are tons of skills and experience to gain in our office for a Halton volunteer. Certain positions in our office are suitable for students seeking a co-op opportunity. For more information on co-op placements, contact Shannon MacKenzie or visit our Volunteer Page for roles we are currently looking for!
Volunteering Outside our Stores
Habitat does more than just build new homes, we also make sure the homes in our community are safe and acceptable for those who already own their home. Through our Handyman Program, we create a group of volunteers with a certified Handyman and go to work taking on renovations of any size. From new drywall to repairing a handrail, Habitat Handyman is an incredible, hands-on way for a Halton volunteer to gain skills and experience in areas a volunteer may have not pictured themselves in. All revenue raised through the Handyman Program goes towards our home building projects, where we can continue to support and build houses for families in need. If our Handyman program sounds of interest to you, be sure to visit our Handyman page to find more information and book your renovation today!
Our Kitchen Salvage/Deconstruction is another program we are proud to offer for those living in the Halton and Mississauga areas. Our team of volunteers and staff work to remove kitchen cabinetry or salvage, and bring it back to our ReStore free of charge. The customer receives a tax receipt for their donation, and we help keep usable material from going to waste in landfills. When we have hard working members of Halton volunteer their time and effort towards bettering the communities we live in, we all succeed.
With several opportunities throughout Habitat for Humanity, we know that there’s something for you. Help us continue our goal in creating more homes for families in need, and help make a difference in your community today!
