Wouldn’t it be the ideal scenario if you could shop while making a positive impact in your community? What if we were to tell you that with Habitat HMD’s ReStores, you can?
Every purchase made from our ReStores allows our organization to do more in expanding affordable housing right here within our community. So while you’re filling your basket with items in our store, you’re also filling a local family with hope.
How does the ReStore support Habitat?
When you come into our ReStore, find the perfect piece of furniture for your home and hand over the money to one of our amazing cashiers, that isn’t where your impact on Habitat ends.
Twenty per cent of the revenue from your purchase will be used to cover administrative costs required to run a not-for-profit organization. The other 80 per cent goes directly into our build fund.
By helping support our operational costs, you’re ensuring that every dollar donated to Habitat HM can go directly into our fund to build more homes. So by purchasing this door, you’re allowing us to invest our energy into what we do best – building affordable housing.
It’s not just making a purchase. It’s creating change within your community.
What makes our ReStores different from traditional thrift stores?
Thrift stores are thought of as the perfect way to get rid of unwanted clutter and give back to your community. Unfortunately, this is a common misconception about the way traditional thrift stores operate. In reality, 75 per cent of your donations are being shipped overseas and the local charities they’re “benefitting” see less than 20 per cent of the thrift store’s revenue from goods donated on their behalf.
So what makes Habitat’s ReStores different? They allow our organization to maintain full control over your donation, from when we receive the item to its resale with a local family. Other charities that don’t have the ability to sell donated items themselves are left with the single option of outsourcing the resale of donations to third-party companies like Value Village.
By maintaining control over the sale of our items, we’re able to ensure that 100 per cent of the net revenue generated goes straight into our fund to build more affordable homes.
What items do we sell in the ReStore?
The better question is what doesn’t the ReStore sell?

What build projects will your purchases help support?
Crew-Goetz Landing Build
Crew-Goetz Landing, located on Queensway Drive in Burlington, is our largest build to date. It will be home to 18 hardworking families within our community. This project began in 2016 and is well on the path to completion.
With all of the planning and permits finalized, we started by demolishing the previous buildings on the lot and prepping the land for our new build. After the foundation was laid and the framing was erected, construction on the home’s exterior began. Now, with the roof’s last shingle laid, our team is beginning work on the home’s interior.
Bristow-Law Build Project
Our Bristow-Law Build, on Merritt Avenue in Mississauga, is transforming a former abandoned fire station into four homes. This project was also launched in 2016 and one day four families will move into these homes.
Following necessary planning, demolition and environmental testing, it was time for building to begin. With the necessary foundations laid, our dedicated volunteers and staff have started framing the four semi-attached homes.
If you’re interested in supporting our build projects, so we can get deserving families moved into these homes as quickly as possible, you can make a donation here.
