CUMIS, a division of The Co-operators group, holds true to one of the 7 major co-op principles: giving back to the communities in which they operate.
Recently, Kelly Tryon of CUMIS presented a $25,000 cheque to John Gerrard, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin (Habitat HMD).
“It is truly inspiring to see so many of our employees eager to get out here and roll up their sleeves to help build homes and strengthen their community,” said Tryon, VP Creditor Insurance and Retail Distribution – Eastern Canada at CUMIS. “Habitat does an amazing job of harnessing the power of volunteerism to build a more equitable society by providing local families with good, healthy homes. That’s something we’re proud to support.”
CUMIS has donated $100,000 to Habitat in the past 4 years.
Glenn Bohay, Senior Manager, Citizenship adds, “As an organization, we look at the value of the donation and want to be able to see the difference it makes. With Habitat, we actually see it going back into the community.”
This was the sixth of nine build days scheduled this year in Burlington involving volunteers from CUMIS and The Co-operators. Both companies provide everystaff member with two paid community volunteer days annually.
Elden Morais, National Business Relationship Manager explains, “The way the Habitat Adopt-a- Day works makes it easy for us to plan in advance. We publish the dates that we’re building at Habitat and employees who would like to use one of their volunteer days sign up.”
This year, CUMIS and The Co-operators are providing 120 staff members with 720 hours of company-paid volunteer time to help build homes in their community.
Habitat CEO John Gerrard stated, “We’re proud to welcome these companies back to our Plains Road build site in Burlington. With today’s generous contribution of $25,000 and their amazing teamwork on site, they are helping 13 local families realize their dream of finally having a place to call home.”
Ensuring a great volunteer experience is critical, as it is through the continued corporate support of companies like CUMIS that Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin continues to provide safe, decent and affordable housing.
