Bristow-Law Project transforming old fire station site into homes for local families

On June 22nd at 11 a.m., dignitaries, press, staff, volunteers and well-wishers gathered for the official groundbreaking and launch of the Bristow-Law Build Project. This event celebrated Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga’s partnership with the Region of Peel and the City of Mississauga to build four new homes for local families in need of a safe, decent and affordable place to live. This property, purchased for a toonie, has undergone the demolition of a former fire station and several months of intensive soil remediation in order to make this project a reality.

“Habitat for Humanity as an organization relies on the support of the community in order to bring more affordable housing to families in need. In Mississauga, it’s clear to us that the community can and will move mountains for us to build additional homes for families and individuals in need.”

– John Gerrard, CEO, Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga

The Bristow-Law Build project was named after two longstanding volunteers at our affiliate, Cheryl Bristow and Robert Law. The name was chosen to celebrate their outstanding commitment to building more affordable housing in Halton and Peel.

Bristow-Law Groundbreaking Ceremony

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, Councillors Carolyn Parrish, Dave Cook, George Carlson and the Region of Peel’s Sue Ritchie were on hand to support this new project reinforcing their commitment to affordable housing and our shared goal that will give more Canadians a place to call home.

“The City of Mississauga is pleased to be partnering with Habitat for Humanity on the Bristow-Law project.  Affordable housing is at the heart of our plans to build a complete city – a Mississauga where people have access to modern public transit, can find good-paying jobs, earn an education and enjoy an unrivalled quality of life. As a Regional Councillor, I’m always supportive of efforts to build more affordable housing and will continue to advocate to my provincial and federal counterparts to ensure that Peel Region receives its fair share of funding so that we can get on with building safe, affordable housing for those who need it.”

– Bonnie Crombie, Mayor, Mississauga

The Bristow-Law Groundbreaking was a celebration, not just for Habitat, but for Mississauga and the Region of Peel. Through our collaboration and tireless efforts to make this project a reality, more truly affordable housing will be coming to Mississauga.

“On behalf of the Region of Peel, I wish to extend our congratulations to Habitat for Humanity and the City of Mississauga for their innovative approach to repurposing public land to make new affordable housing available for local families in Malton. It is only with the full participation of community organizations, residents, volunteers, our local municipalities and governments at all levels that we can increase affordable housing and move toward making it available to all Peel residents.”

– Martin Medeiros, Human Services Committee Chair, Region of Peel

These groundbreaking ceremonies are important reminders to all of us, that the work we do in the community will make a lasting, life-long change for the families and individuals we help on the pathway to homeownership.

Now, the real work begins.
