Build in Halifax This Summer with Habitat for Humanity

Halifax, Nova Scotia July 15 – 22, 2018

Canada is recognized for being one of the best places to live on earth, and is known for having a low poverty rate compared to the rest of the world. However, most people are unaware of the fact that there are still many families who do not have a safe or decent place to live. Habitat For Humanity Canada’s mission is to give a hand-up to hardworking, low-income families in Canada to enable them to live in safe, affordable homes.

Why should I go to Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia’s traditionally resource-based economy has diversified in recent decades, and now includes defence and aerospace sectors, as well as tourism and film industries. However, the province’s imports far exceed its exports, and the median family income is below the national average. Nova Scotia as a whole faces several socio-economic issues, including a lack of affordable housing.

Tell me about Habitat For Humanity Nova Scotia

Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia’s provincial roots were established in 1992. To date, more than 60 homes have been built throughout the province to help low income working families achieve the goal of successful homeownership.

An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada, HFH NS forms part of the more than 55 affiliate organizations across the country working towards homeownership – which enables our partner families to achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build brighter futures.

What will my week look like?

Sunday July 15 – Arrival in Halifax, transport to accommodation

Monday July 16 – Cultural day (local tours) and welcome dinner

Tuesday July 17 – Saturday July 21 – Build days

Sunday July 22 – Departure for home or other travels

Where will I stay? What will I eat?

The team will be staying in several apartments located at Mt. St. Vincent University. We will have breakfast at the apartments, lunch will be provided at the build site, and dinner will be at local restaurants. Snacks and water will be provided at the worksite.

What will it cost?

The cost for this eight day opportunity to build in Nova Scotia is approximately $1650 + airfare. The trip cost covers: lodging, food and ground transportation for the build portion of the trip, traveler’s medical insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to the Global Village Canada program. Participants will need to arrange and pay for round-trip air transportation from their point of departure to Halifax.

Flight arrangements must be made in consultation with the team leader. *Habitat for Humanity Canada will issue a charitable donation tax receipt for the trip cost and the eligible airfare – these will be 2 separate receipts.

Meet the Team Leader

My name is Brenley Crawford and I live in Mississauga. I am a firm believer in Habitat For Humanity’s “hand up, not a handout” philosophy. I have been involved with my local Habitat affiliate since 2007, and with HFH Global Village for several years. This will be my eighth build.

My previous builds (Zambia, New Zealand, El Salvador, Philippines, Honduras, Fiji, and Nicaragua) were all unique and rewarding, offering me the opportunity to build several different types of housing, as well as to experience and interact with the cultures and people of these fascinating countries.

I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to lead a team right here in Canada in July 2018. If you would like to make a difference in the life of a hardworking, deserving family, contact me at rockmama@rogers.com for more information.
