Youth Skilled Trades Program

Aka. Tiny Homes Program

Youth skilled trades program
Tiny Home - Youth Skilled Trades

Empowering youth in the skilled trades by building simple, decent and affordable tiny homes.

"Habitat for Humanity tiny home program is a great that I would recommend anybody to get involved in. Whether you are interested in the trades or not, it's meet new people, learn skills, and your community."

The Youth Skilled Trades program gives high school students like Ava the opportunity to explore the skilled trades while making a tangible impact. Located directly on their school campus, students participate in a real-world construction site building a tiny home. Working under the supervision of professional skilled tradespeople, students gain hands-on residential construction experience such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.

In partnership with our local school boards, we seamlessly integrate into the existing high school curriculum which allows us to engage approximately 75 students on each tiny home.

Get your school involved

“As expected, the program feeds a passion for skilled trade careers at a time when engagement needs to soar to meet demand. I now have a waiting list for the course and have seen a dramatic rise in students graduating into apprenticeships or college trades programs that will lead to fulfilling careers, living wages and the ability to support families”

We have partnerships with the School Boards within Halton Region, Peel Region, and Dufferin County, currently engaging with 12 high schools in the area. If you are interested in bringing the Youth Skilled Trades Program to your high school, please join our interest list.

Community Wealth Building

“The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation is excited about the work we are doing through our Habitat ‘Indigenous Housing’ Partnerships help us to meet family needs in the community! Not only are we building affordable homes in our community using innovation and state-of-the-art design, but we are providing hands-on training for students in the housing and construction trades. We appreciate the dedication and skills coming to our First Nation; building lasting relationships and sharing in cultural exchanges at the same time.”

Environmental Sustainability

Our upcoming construction designs for 2024-2025 are dedicated to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. This means our tiny homes will produce more clean energy than they consume. Maximizing energy efficiency also decreases utility costs for the end user.

Habitat for Humanity HMD is integrating environmental sustainability into the Youth Skilled Trades Program by

  • Providing data such as embodied carbon and energy consumption.
  • Collaborations with local environmental organizations.
  • Developing hands-on opportunities to engage in sustainable construction.
