Take your kids to work day: an annual tradition where grade 9 students accompany their parents to give them a glimpse into the working world. IKEA Burlington’s take your kids to work day saw employees taking time away from their busy schedules to work alongside their children and channel their collective creativity into a project for charity.
On November 6, the lucky students with parents employed at IKEA Burlington were tasked with a very important project: to design and build a bedroom out of IKEA merchandise that would go on to support Habitat HM’s building initiatives. A project like this is an incredible opportunity for younger generations to experience the act of giving back and to learn more about charitable organizations such as Habitat.
IKEA Burlington is no stranger to community building initiatives and has become a home sponsor for our 18-townhome Crew-Goetz Landing build, supplying brand new kitchens for each of these homes. They have also made numerous donations to Habitat HM’s ReStores.
As our major social enterprise, Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores provide revenue to help us realize our mission of building decent affordable homes in the communities we serve. Without the generous donations of partners like IKEA Burlington we would not be able to conduct as many building projects, meaning even more families would be left without affordable housing.
As an active project partner with Habitat HM, IKEA Burlington’s mission aligns with ours, making them the perfect partner for this project. This particular venture had one simple goal: to produce a bedroom whose revenue would then go into Habitat HM’s build program.
With this goal in mind and under the watchful guidance of their parents, the grade 9 students constructed a variety of homeware to outfit the room, including bookshelves, dressers, desks, and even a full closet – with additional storage!
When the bedroom was complete, everyone took a step back to marvel at their hard work. The finished product was an amazing unisex set up that looked like it was straight out of the pages of a Style at Home catalogue.
Once the construction was done, it was time to pack it all up again and relocate it to Habitat HM!
A huge thank you to IKEA Burlington for generously working with Habitat HM once again to back our mission of supplying affordable housing to families in need. Without the support of our community partners, we would not be able to achieve the work that we do within our community.
If you are inspired by this incredible act of kindness, find out how you can get involved here.
Until next time IKEA Burlington!
