The world is changing, and so are we. People in our present-day world are faced with a host of challenges, the cost of living is higher than it ever has been, and many people are struggling just to make ends meet. At the same time, the results of decades of unsustainable living practices in North America are starting to catch up with us. According to a study, Ontario produces nearly one ton of waste a year per person living in the province. In order for our community to move forward in the 21st century, this needs to change. In 2016, the Waste Free Ontario Act encouraged producers to turn more of their waste into new products to combat the environmental footprint in our province. Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga’s answer to this ask is the ReVive DIY Centre.
What is the ReVive DIY Centre?
Whether you’re an expert with tools, an artist or an aspiring Pinterest-er, the ReVive DIY Centre has a project waiting for you. Do you love Do-It-Yourself projects? ReVive is all about DIY with purpose.
The ReVive Centre is Habitat HM’s multipurpose product development centre. ReVive recycles, transforms and breathes new life into donated products and materials that would otherwise be sent to the landfill. As a green-oriented initiative and the very first of its kind, the ReVive Centre is an innovative, unique idea that helps raise funds Habitat’s operational costs and home building program, empowering low-income families in our community.
Volunteers and corporate volunteer teams help us transform donated material and products that are in need of renewing, up-cycling or refinishing. Participants have the opportunity to learn some incredible new skills and are able to flex their creative muscles in either our Workshop, our DIY space or Kids Build room.
ReVive upcycles, we give new life to furniture and items we might otherwise have had to throw away. On top of that, ReVive also uses locally-sourced materials, like live-edge hardwood, to create new and unique items. Using recycled lumber helps us reduce our community’s carbon footprint.
The Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga ReStore is a home improvement outlet that accepts donations of overstocked, gently used, discontinued items and salvageable building materials donated from manufacturers, other stores, local contractors and the public. The ReStore then sells those donated items to the public at a greatly reduced cost.
The ReVive DIY Centre helps support the ReStore and Habitat by breathing new life into items donated to the ReStore. This allows us to take more donations from our community and divert additional waste from landfills. It also provides additional opportunities for volunteers to build and create in a controlled environment. Above all, ReVive builds on our sales capacity through the ReStore and has a direct impact on our ability to build affordable homes for families.
The ReVive DIY Centre is an amazing experience for corporations and other groups. It offers a space for you to team build while creating new items for us to sell in our ReStores. The monetary donation required for teams to participate in that program then also goes to Habitat and helps us build more homes in our community.
